House Sitting Southland

House Sitting Southland

Southland is known for Fiordland National Park, snow-capped mountains and Milford Sound.

In Southland, you’ll find geological wonders of the world including large areas of untouched rainforest, Curio Bay on the Catlins Coast. The petrified forest of subtropical kauri and other trees dates back to the age of the dinosaurs, 135 to 190 million years ago.

Fiordland National Park is the most scenic area in Southland and arguably one of New Zealand’s greatest attractions.

Invercargill is Southland’s largest urban centre. Many visitors are drawn to this city for its elegant Victorian and Edwardian buildings, gardens and country parks. Like Dunedin to the north, Invercargill was originally settled by people from Scotland.

Half an hour’s drive south of Invercargill is Bluff Fishing Harbour. The famous fishing port of Bluff is just half an hour north of Invercargill and is famous for its famous Bluff oysters. Once you try these, you won’t want to eat any other. Simply excellent. The annual Bluff Oyster and Southland Seafood festivals are also held here.

From Bluff you have the option of taking a ferry to Steward Island and Diesel Island.
Steward Island is 1 km long and 40 km miles wide and is a haven for many exceptional birds including the Kaka, Tui and Bellbirds.
Diesel Island has 700 km of coastline and only 20 km of roads. The island is home to Kiwis, Cormorants, seagulls and blue penguins as well as yellow-eyed penguins.
