Step by Step Guide for Home Owners
Register on NZ House Sitters
To get started, create a free homeowner account. Please visit our home owner membership page to get started. You’ll need to fill out a form with your account details, including your name, email, username and password. Once registered, you’ll have full access to your dashboard and all account features.
Publish your house sitting assignment
From your Dashboard, click “New House Ad” (or “Create a House Ad” from the account menu) to post your assignment.
Be sure to include plenty of detail about your home, pets, and any tasks or requirements. Adding photos isn’t required but is highly recommended—listings with photos attract more interest and stand out to sitters.
Connect with House Sitters
With your listing live, you can start reaching out to sitters directly.
You can also sit back and wait for sitters to contact you—your ad will be included in our daily email alerts sent to members at 4am each day.
Communications & Confirmation System
Use our internal messaging system to communicate with potential sitters. Once you’ve found a suitable sitter and agreed on the terms, click “Invite Sitter” in your message thread to send them an invitation to confirm the house sit.
Your chosen sitter will receive an email and can either accept or decline your invitation. You’ll be notified by email once they respond.
After confirmation, a messaging form will remain available in the system so you can continue communicating with your sitter.
We strongly recommend signing a written agreement with your sitter to ensure everything is clear for both parties.
Learning phase
Before the house sit begins, take some time to show your sitter all the tasks involved, including pet care, garden care, and general property duties.
We also recommend reviewing our Homeowner Checklist, available on your Dashboard, to make sure nothing is missed.
