Description

I’m looking for a mature, reliable couple who enjoy animals and country living, and will care thoughtfully for my home, gardens and animals while I’m away.

My home sits on eight acres in a beautiful valley, with mountain views, sheep, chickens and a river for swimming in warmer weather or trying your hand at gold panning. It’s a peaceful setting, about 40 minutes’ drive from Wakefield, yet only 10 minutes from the nearest supermarket and a weekday coffee cart.

About you

This sit would suit a practical, caring couple who are happy spending plenty of time at the property and enjoy the routines of looking after animals and gardens. Previous rural house-sitting or animal-care experience would be an advantage.

I need people I can depend on to follow care instructions, notice if something needs attention, and contact me promptly with any concerns. You’ll need your own vehicle and should be comfortable with a quiet rural location and off-grid living.

What’s involved

  • Daily care of the sheep and chickens, including checking their water and wellbeing.
    • Watering the gardens morning and evening, according to the weather and instructions provided.
    • Possibly bottle-feeding a couple of lambs morning and evening. They may be weaned or down to one feed by then; I’ll confirm this before we agree to the sit.
    • Keeping the house clean and tidy and taking good care of the property.
    • Being on site if a serious storm is forecast, to monitor the power system and attend to the generator if needed.

There is room for local outings around these responsibilities, but the animals and gardens do need consistent daily attention.

The home

You’ll have a comfortable bedroom with a king-size bed. The house has a simple-to-use compost toilet and is completely off grid, with an automatic-start backup generator for prolonged poor weather. You may need to refill its fuel tank or start it manually if required. I’ll show you how everything works.

In colder weather, heating is provided by a Homewood woodstove, which is also wonderful for cooking. Full instructions and a practical handover will be provided.

Kahurangi National Park is nearby, with walks ranging from gentle outings to more adventurous tracks. Some feature remarkably preserved gold-mining equipment—a fascinating glimpse into the valley’s history.

If you enjoy peaceful surroundings, animals and a practical country lifestyle, this could be a lovely place to spend some time.

Please tell me a little about yourselves, your relevant experience, and why this sit appeals to you. Recent house-sitting references are requested, and I’d like to arrange a phone or video conversation before confirming the sit.
